Lucky

Lucky is a 15 year young Cairn Terrier mix who was adopted from the Carson shelter, part of the Los Angeles County shelter system. I was originally at the Carson shelter on unrelated business and briefly noticed Lucky, but didn 't pay much attention to him at the time. Later that weekend, a friend of mine brought up the idea of adopting him. I 've always had a soft spot for giving older and needy animals homes, so I thought about it. Less than an hour passed by and I knew it was meant to be. I hadn 't even adopted him yet and an immediate bond had formed. He escaped death by 1 week. When I first adopted Lucky, he was severely flea ridden, emaciated, and had a mouth full of rotten teeth (all 5 of them). The shelter thought he had been kicked in the jaw as they claimed his jaw was slightly deformed. The shelter also thought he had radial paralysis and amputated his front left paw as a result. After being adopted, he underwent surgery and all of his teeth were rotten and loose and had to be extracted. It took 5 baths to get him clean and get rid of the fleas that invaded his body.

That was Lucky then and Lucky is now a changed dog. The minute Lucky stepped foot in his new home, an instant bond was formed and he followed me. Wherever I went, he was following right behind. He was very grateful to be given a second chance and he showed it: A second chance that nobody else was willing to give him. He knew what it was liked to be truly loved for the first time in his life and he flourished with life like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. He 's slowly gaining weight back on a special home cooked diet and is a different dog. People often comment on what a cute puppy he is. It 's hard to tell that he 's 15 years young by observing him.

My life has changed too since adopting him. No matter how bad my day is, it 's always made better by coming home to Lucky and my troubles are forgotten. I am truly grateful that I was able to give him a loving home.
